The Wonderful, Exciting World Beyond Pad Thai

The beautiful thing about food is that it speaks to almost everyone. Still, some refuse to talk back, sticking solely to the language they know.

You like what you like. That’s understandable. However, there is a world filled with some incredibly imaginative dishes just waiting to be explored.

Australia, for example, has had a love affair with Thai food for the longest time. But ask yourself this: Would you choose Pad Kra Pao if you saw Pad Thai on the menu?

So, the next time you want some takeaway and look up ‘Thai in Windsor’, you need to consider what flavours you wish to discover. Pick a dish that is new and exciting. If you are lucky, the place you order from will also offer a range of fusion dishes.

A few dishes to look out for

When it comes to Thai and other South-East Asian cuisines, there is a focus on the balance of flavours. An authentic Thai dish, for instance, will walk a delicate line between being sweet, salty and sour.

Keeping that in mind, these are some dishes you need to try for South-East Asian cuisine.

Nasi Goreng

Calling Nasi Goreng a fried rice dish is technically correct. It doesn’t do it justice, however.

Rice, meat, and vegetables are all fried together with dark sweet soy sauce and shrimp paste. That soy sauce and shrimp paste lend the dish its distinctive taste.

Though there is no definitive recipe for Nasi Goreng, often you will find it being served with a fried egg on top. When that yolk breaks and runs all over the rice, you know you are about to tuck into something good.

What’s even better is that Nasi Goreng is just the dish to get rid of those annoying hangovers. Spicy, starchy and packed with meat and vegetables, this dish will set you straight without any questions asked.

Wonton soup

If you google ‘Thai in Windsor’, you will find several places offering wonton soup. It’s a good thing, too, because few can match up to Thai cuisine when it comes to soups and broths.

It may not sound like the most exciting thing on the menu, but you can’t go wrong with a bowl of wonton soup.

Soft dumplings, packed into a bowl of noodles, all topped off with a rich, hearty broth, makes for the perfect dish in winter. You didn’t think this was your average bowl of chicken soup, did you?

Laksa

While not technically Thai, laksa makes a compelling case for itself. A bowlful of this coconut-based soup is the fastest way to warm your belly.

Traditionally, laksa uses vermicelli noodles as a base for its broth. And, that’s the beautiful thing about it. The rich, spicy broth coats every bit of those noodles. You will definitely feel the heat when you take a mouthful of it.

You needn’t worry. After all, spicy food isn’t as scary as it is made out to be.

In summary

Whenever you see something new, take a moment before deciding against it. You could be passing on something that you may have really liked for all you know.

Michelin-starred Chef Chumpol Jangprai, when talking about food sustainability, said: ‘Thai food is the most delicious medicine’.

If you go beyond what you know, you will agree with the general sentiment behind that statement.
